Just came across an article in the Telegraph. Provides tactics of which broadband provider to use for different situations. Here is their snippet on PAYG deals.
You can get pay as you go mobile broadband deals if you don’t want to be locked in. For example, with 3′s mobile broadband pay as you go deal, you pay £29.35 for the USB stick and then from £10 per 1GB download. O2 charges the same for the stick and from £7.50 per 1GB download.
Original full length version of the article was on the Telegraph website.
Another handy paraphrased snippet…

If you are considering purchasing mobile broadband for your computer or laptop, then it is worth checking whether your computer will cope. Here are the minumum system specifications for each mobile broadband providers broadband dongle / modem.
Summary: As long as your computer is running Windows 2000 on a PC or OS X Panther on a Mac, you have 256MB RAM and a USB port you should be fine. The most important bit is the USB port – a mobile dongle won’t easily work without one so check you have one. Otherwise you will likely need to go for a PCMCIA card to plug into your laptop.

In writing the previous post I have just been looking around the Three mobile broadband website. They have a handy little feature that gives you an idea of how much data you can download on your computer or laptop. It gives you a good idea of what you can expect to get for your money.

What I like about Three, is the information is pretty clear (although some people have struggled with the process of redeeming a mobile broadband voucher online); you have to go over a few hurdles to get the credit added on and verified to your mobile broadband credit account. With mobiles you just buy the voucher and then call a number to add the credit to your phone.
What is the best mobile broadband Pay as you go (PAYG) deal?
Well by doing a little research on the web, looking at forums and the like – Three mobile broadband and T-mobile broadband seem pretty popular.

The following information is published on the Three (3) website; they do a good job of explaining things. Visit the original content on the Three website.
What is Ready-to-go Mobile Broadband?
Plusnet broadband offer two residential broadband deals (so not for business broadband or mobile broadband users).
If you use the internet for less than 10 hours per week then the Plusnet pay as you go service could be the home broadband deal for you.
You connect with no commitments – e.g. no contract, and there are no limits on your usage.
You connect to Plusnet by connecting to a low-call telephone number using any land-line telephone and are charged on a per minute basis. The Plusnet service simply uses a 56k modem (so really slow connection speeds) and you will need to use an existing modem (it will most likely be in-built into your computer but do check)
Orange provide mobile broadband that gives you a high-speed internet connection without the need for a landline – perfect for when you’re on the move.
Visit the Orange website for further information.

The EU has voted through a bill to reduce SMS and mobile broadband data roaming charges which will come into force on 1 July this year.
UK travellers to mainland Europe will be able to send texts back home for just €0.11 (10p), compared with the current EU-wide average of €0.29.
“This is a good example of how the EU can bring real benefits to British people,” said Caroline Flint, UK minister for Europe.
Mobile phone and mobile broadband operators have also been ordered to provide clearer details on charges for mobile broadband data downloaded when abroad. - so it will still be pay as you go broadband, but the prices will be clearer
